The Santa Ana Zoo at Prentice Park in the City of Santa Ana, CA, is a 20-acre (8.1-hectare) zoo devoted to Central and South American animals and flora. The Santa Ana Zoo welcomes more than 270,000 visitors each year. The city of Santa Ana owns and operates the zoo, which opened in 1952. Joseph Prentice provided property for the zoo on the condition that the city maintains a constant population of at least 50 monkeys. That was the uncommon request made in 1952 by Joseph Prentice, the founder of Prentice Park’s Santa Ana Zoo. Mr. Prentice needed that there be a minimum of 50 monkeys on the premises at all times in order for the Zoo to exist. When you pay a visit, keep an eye out for the 50 monkeys. This lovely Zoo is home to approximately 80 different types of animals, and even some of the world’s tiniest monkeys: Golden Headed Lion Tamarins.

The Zoo is a place to have fun, educate oneself, and spend time with the family. When adults and kids visit the Zoo, they can spend time together studying about animals, discovering plants, and enjoying the surroundings. Additionally, there is a children’s farm, a train ride, a carousel dedicated to endangered animals, and a Ferris wheel depicting our famed Fifty Monkeys.

Exhibits

Tierra De Las Pampas

Tierra de las Pampas, or “Land of the Grasses,” debuted in the Santa Ana Zoo in April 2010. It is the first of a new display series. It is a two-acre (8,100 m2) exhibit that has gigantic anteaters in one area and greater rheas and guanacos in another, connected by a trail.

Rainforest Exhibit

It is a modest display that depicts the Amazon rainforest, which is inhabited by green iguanas and white-faced saki monkeys.

Amazon’s Edge

This exhibition, which opened on September 1, 1993, is a recreation of a part of Brazil’s jungle. The exhibit features a forested riverbank and a water moat situated against a cliffside, as well as a wooden terrace from which visitors can view the animals. Howler monkeys,  crested screamers, and black-necked swans are among the species on display.

Colors of the Amazon Aviary

On August 1, 1996, the 9,000-square-foot (840-square-meter) Colors of the Amazon Aviary opened. This walk-through aviary features a diverse collection of South American birds in a lusciously landscaped habitat complete with flowing streams.

Crean Family Farm

It was established in July 2004 and specializes in rare and depressed farm animal breeds. The facility’s focal point is a two-story red barn that shelters the complex’s bigger species.

Ocelot Habitat and Education Center

The Ocelot Habitat houses a breeding pair of Brazilian Ocelots that live in two interconnected habitats. At interactive picnic tables, visitors may learn about the ocelot’s unusual adaptations.
