The county’s earliest settlement, Mission San Juan Capistrano, was founded in 1776. In the late 1800s investors eyed agriculture, particularly oranges, as a great opportunity and the industry flourished, hence where the county name derives.Agriculture declined after WWII, however with the completion of Interstate 5 the county’s prosperity soared.
