About Thousand Oaks, California

The City of Thousand Oaks is a premiere community recognized for being one of the most desirable places in all of California to live, work, recreate, and raise a family. Located in between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara in Ventura County, Thousand Oaks is nestled against the Santa Monica Mountains and with over 15,000 acres of natural publicly owned open space located within the City’s boundaries. It is the second-largest city in Ventura County, California and is named after the several oak trees present in the area. As of 2019, the City has an estimated population of 126,813.

One of the earliest names used for the area was Conejo Mountain Valley, as used by the founder of Newbury Park, Egbert Starr Newbury, in the 1870s.  In the 1920’s, a local name contest was held, where 14-year-old Bobby Harrington’s name suggestion won: Thousand Oaks. The valley was — and still is — characterized by its tens of thousands of oak trees (50,000–60,000 in 2012).

Due to the temperate climate and relatively close proximity to the studios in Hollywood, a number of movies and television series have been filmed in the City. Thousand Oaks Boulevard can for instance be seen in the Oscar-winning film It Happened One Night (1934), while Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis stop at a service station on Live Oak Street in Hollywood or Bust (1956). Hills near California Lutheran University were used in the filming of Welcome to Hard Times (1967). Spartacus (1960) was also filmed by CLU. Movies are still being made at Ventura Farms (previously Deerwood Stock Farm), Greenfield Ranch, and the JMJ Ranch.

The City prides itself on its designated open space with 150 miles of trails for hiking, biking, or just leisurely walking. Thousand Oaks is a Tree City, USA, and has been named one of the county’s greenest cities. In addition, the City has been designated one of the safest cities in the US and one of 10 great cities to raise kids. Thousand Oaks is home to some of the nation’s top schools, outstanding parks, and a myriad of shopping opportunities, including one of the largest auto malls in the nation.

Another world class event that the City is proud to be a part of is the Amgen Tour of California. Thousand Oaks has served as host to the final stages of this international cycling race on several occasions. The Amgen Tour of California is the nation’s largest and most recognized cycling event. Thousand Oaks is one of the United States’ top 50 bike-friendly cities.
