About Bell Gardens, California

Bell Gardens is a city in Los Angeles County, California, USA. It is bordered by Bell and Cudahy on the west, Commerce on the north and northeast, Downey on the southeast, and South Gate on the southwest. The city’s population was 42,072 at the 2010 census. Bell Gardens is part of the Gateway Cities Region, a largely urbanized region located in the south-eastern Los Angeles County. Like the rest of the Gateway Cities, Bell Gardens was once part of the vast landholdings of Don Antonio Lugo, who in 1810 received a big swath of ranch land from the king of Spain in recognition of his military service.

The City is rich in California history. With three major landmarked homes within the 2.4 square miles of greater Bell Gardens, the city has an outsized physical connection to the early European settlement of the region.

Bell Gardens offers plenty of recreational opportunities such as the Rio Hondo and L.A. River bike paths that bracket the city, a municipal golf course, and bucolic John Anson Ford Park. Furthermore, it is one of the more affordable communities in the L.A. Basin hosting condos and townhomes starting just above $300,000 and single-family homes sitting below the $600,000 mark.

The City is also notable for being one of only six Los Angeles County cities (out of 88 total) to permit casino gambling and for being home of the oldest building in Los Angeles County.
