About Cerritos, California

Cerritos, also known as Dairy Valley (1956-1967), is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States, and is one of several cities that constitute the Gateway Cities of southeast Los Angeles County. Cerritos lies along the Los Angeles County and Orange County border. The cities bordering Cerritos on the Los Angeles County side include Artesia in the center, Bellflower, Lakewood, Norwalk, Santa Fe Springs and La Mirada. Buena Park and La Palma border the city on the Orange County side. Other cities in the region include Cypress in Orange County, and Hawaiian Gardens and Long Beach in Los Angeles County. It was incorporated on April 24, 1956 and a part of the Los Angeles–Long Beach–Anaheim, California Metropolitan Statistical Area designated by the Office of Management and Budget.

With a population of 49,859 people (as of 2019) and 11 constituent neighborhoods, Cerritos is the 173rd largest community in California. Cerritos is an extremely ethnically-diverse city. The people who call Cerritos home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Cerritos residents report their race to be Asian, followed by White. Cerritos also has a sizeable Hispanic population (people of Hispanic origin can be of any race). People of Hispanic or Latino origin account for 13.46% of the city’s residents. Important ancestries of people in Cerritos include German, English, Irish, Italian, and French. In addition, most of the residents in the city were born outside of the US.

Housing costs in Cerritos are among some of the highest in the nation, although real estate prices in the city don’t compare to real estate prices in the most expensive communities in California. Cerritos is a decidedly a white-collar city, with fully 88.58% of the workforce employed in white-collar jobs, well above the national average. Overall, Cerritos is a city of professionals, sales and office workers, and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Cerritos who work in healthcare, office and administrative support, and management occupations. Also of interest is that Cerritos has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.

Because of many things, Cerritos is a great place for families with children to consider. First of all, many other families with children live in the city, making Cerritos a place where both parents and children are more likely to develop social ties with other families, as well as find family-oriented services and community. The city’s good public school district and large population of college-educated adults provide an environment conducive to academic values. With regard to real estate, Cerritos has a high rate of owner-occupied single family homes, which tends to reflect stability in the local community. Furthermore, Cerritos’s overall crime rate is lower than average for the country.
