About El Segundo, California

Sandwiched between LAX to the north, the 405 Freeway to the east, Manhattan Beach to the south and and the Pacific Ocean, El Segundo has been a quite giant since its early years of incorporation. Its name, meaning “second” in Spanish, was named such as it was the second site for Standard Oil (Chevron) on the West Coast. Ever since oil and big industry has played a formidable part in El Segundo’s development in 1917. Since those early days, the city has only added a few thousand residents to reach its current population of around 17,000, but as a center for business, innovation and wealth, El Segundo can’t be underestimated. Douglass Aircraft, a major airplane builder during WWII, later becoming Northrop Grumman, established the area as a major aerospace center. Now Boeing, Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Wyle Laboratories, The Aerospace Corporation, and Aerojet Rocketdyne Holdings all call El Segundo home. The last two are headquartered there. It is also home to the Los Angeles Air Force Base and the Space and Missile Systems Center. Recently the Los Angeles Times newspaper moved its newsroom from Downtown LA to a 4.5 acre campus in El Segundo. AT&T, Mattel Toys, Big 5 Sporting Goods, DirecTV, Quest Nutrition are additional formidable players headquartered here. To put it succinctly, El Segundo is home to the most Fortune 500 companies in California after San Francisco.

While El Segundo has been synonymous as an ideal business environment, it still pulls off small-town community charm to provide a high quality of life for its employers and residents. There are tree-lined neighborhoods with award winning schools, parks, athletic fields, as well as a wealth of dining and retail experiences that range from historic Main Street to modern lifestyle centers. Its nearly $90,000 median household income is well above the region’s average. Property values average above $800,000. Income, business and livability has encouraged the increased sense of community with the town’s own brewery, distillery, butterfly preserve, the largest clean water purification facility west of the Mississippi, and the South Bay’s largest Candy Cane Lane.
