About Torrance, California

The City of Torrance is a South Bay region of Los Angeles County, California, United States. Torrance has 1.5 miles (2.4 km) of beaches on the Pacific Ocean. Torrance has a moderate year-round climate with warm temperatures, sea breezes, and low humidity.

Since its incorporation in 1921, Torrance has grown rapidly. With a population of near 150,000, residential and light high-tech industries city has 90,000 street trees and 30 city parks. Known for its low crime rates, the city consistently ranks among the safest cities in Los Angeles County. Torrance is the birthplace of the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO). In addition, the city of Torrance has the second-highest percentage of Japanese demographic in California.

It was known early in its history that the area around Torrance was rich in resources, particularly petroleum, and had the potential for development. As soon as the first petroleum started to flow out of Torrance, there was a sudden increase in residing here. The new discovery, during the early 20th Century, was a big hit for the city as it brought in new residents and allowed for expansion of the city. As the industry grew, the city grew just as quickly and was soon one of the larger cities on the West Coast.

Torrance is now home to many companies that started during the early 20th century that took advantage of the increase in population. Many other industries have claimed Torrance home, including major retail outlets and quite a few light industrial companies.

Some of the products that come out of Torrance include produce, helicopters, petroleum products, chemicals, plastics, computers, and electronic equipment. The increased number of industries that Torrance encompassed lead to many larger corporations wanting part of the action. American Honda, Robinson Helicopters, Honeywell’s Garrett, Alcoa Fastening Systems, Pelican Products, Allied Signal Aerospace, Exxon Mobile are some of the firms that call Torrance home.

Torrance is home to many large attractions that are worth a visit, including the Torrance Cultural Arts Center, the Torrance Historical Museum, the Madrona Marsh (a freshwater nature preserve), The Del Amo Fashion Center (5th largest mall in the US), and such annual events as the Daily Breeze International Festival.
