About La Mesa, California

Popularly known as “The Jewel of the Hills”, the City of La Mesa is located 9 miles east of Downtown San Diego with a population of over 58,000 residents. La Mesa means the table in Spanish or alternately, plateau, relating to its geography.

Incorporated in 1912, La Mesa has evolved from a sleepy farming community into today’s dynamic metropolitan area while retaining its spectacular natural beauty. In its early days, this small town has been in the movie-making business. Throughout much growth, both in population and industry, La Mesa’s sophisticated yet quaint image has only risen over the years. The City is now best known for its seasonal festivities as well as the nostalgic downtown area on the La Mesa Boulevard, more popularly known as “The Village”. Taking a stroll into “The Village” will transport you back in time. The Village is the historical center of La Mesa. Many of the buildings remain as they were in 1912. La Mesa Boulevard features one-of-a-kind retail stores, antique stores, and dining places. The Village also hosts several seasonal events such as Oktoberfest, Christmas in the Village, and Back to the 80’s Car Show.

La Mesa features 14 parks, a municipal pool and a golf course. Recreational spots nearby include Lake Murray, a very popular venue for hiking, bicycling, jogging, roller blading, boating, fishing and picnicking, along with Mission Trails Regional Park, one of the largest urban parks in the country encompassing over 5,000 acres of both natural and developed recreational space. Source: Wikipedia
