State-of-the-art communication has changed dramatically in the last 50 years. Back then, both homes and hotels had similar technologies – dial telephones. Many devices, services and concepts that we take for granted today did not exist back then:
- High-speed internet and Wi-Fi
- Handheld mobile devices
- Cable TV
- Streaming video
- Video games
Today, the average home has most of these things, and more. Hotels and resorts generally have limited Wi-Fi and a sparsely-equipped Business Center, at best. The hospitality industry has largely not kept up with technological advances. When guests stay at such hotels, the inadequacy of their high-tech amenities makes guests feel more like they are at a campground.
Guests Frequenting Resort Conglomerates Want High-Tech Capabilities and Consistency
When they visit your resort, they come for the skiing, hiking, beaches, city or whatever recreation you offer. When they return to the room, they hope to find the same high-tech features that they left at home.
When they visit other resorts in your conglomerate, guests are looking for consistency. They want to know that the high-tech features they find attractive in one resort of the conglomerate are available in all resorts. Making sure that all your resorts have the same technological amenities increases customer loyalty to your entire conglomerate. Repeat business is always good.
Hilton and Marriott resorts, among others, are both getting heavily investing in upgraded room and resort technologies, saying with “technology…guests stays feel more comfortable and predictable with heightened connected technology devices and systems.
Tech-Savvy Guests Will Pay More for the Right Amenities
Making high-tech amenities available to guests is not a one-time effort. It is an ongoing process that will require frequent upgrades. The demands on internet speed and bandwidth will continuously increase. These increases call for higher capacity modems, bandwidth controllers, routers and access points. Remove or reduce restrictions on Wi-Fi and make that Wi-Fi better. Permit streaming. Replace all televisions with Smart Televisions. Enable usage of major streaming services like Hulu, Netflix and Amazon. Add mobile device charging outlets throughout the unit and public areas of the resort. Institute mobile checkins and ability to use their smartphones to communicate with the hotel via an app or messaging. Deliver personalized services and experiences. For these types of amenities guests are not only willing to pay more, they are willing to provide valuable personal data that can increase their loyalty to the brand.
Keeping Pace With Technology Requires New Equipment
Yesterday it was state-of-the-art. Today it’s obsolete. That’s the nature of technology. That material is e-waste or possibly down-cycled to other industries or business applications throughout the U.S. or abroad. You can’t just throw it in the trash. Someone must recycle the reusable material, isolate that which is dangerous or toxic and get rid of what remains. Alternatively, technology items that are still operable and can be used again needs experienced resellers to find new outlets for its use. These approaches are not only good for the economy. They are also good for the environment.
