The Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego’s Profile
San Diego’s Museum of Contemporary Art was established in the year 1941. It has a permanent collection of more than 4,000 works of art from 1950 to the present.
History:
MCASD or the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego was created in the year 1941 as La Jolla’s Art Center. It now has two locations: one in La Jolla in California and one in downtown San Diego.
The MCASD Downtown has three buildings that are located in America Plaza across the Santa Fe Depot. The expansion in 2007 included the renovation of the baggage building of the Sana Fe Depot. They are equipping it for site-specific and large-scale art installations.
The La Jolla site was previously a private residence that was made in 1916. It overlooks the ocean. Included here are around 2 acres of oceanfront property that Venturi, Scott Brown & Associates’ renovated in 1996.

The permanent collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) includes more than 4,600 works made after 1950. It represents a variety of media and genres: installation, painting, sculpture, works on paper, photography, and video.
The highlights of the collection are Californian and Latin American Art, Conceptual Art, Pop Art, and Minimalism. It includes works from notable artists like Roman de Salvo, Richard Wright, Richard Serra and Jenny Holzer.
