About Santa Ana, California

Situated in the middle of Orange County along the Santa Ana River, the city of Santa Ana is the largest city in the county. With a population of 332,318 as of the 2019 U.S. Census, Santa Ana is the second most populous city in the county and the 57th most populous city in the United States.

Founded in 1869, the city is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area, the second-largest metropolitan area in the United States. In 2011, Forbes ranked Santa Ana the fourth-safest city of over 250,000 residents in the United States. Santa Ana’s northwestern and southern edges are part of the two largest commercial clusters in Orange County: the Anaheim–Santa Ana edge city and the South Coast Plaza–John Wayne Airport edge city.

The core of the city is the downtown area, which contains both retail and housing, as well as the Santa Ana Civic Center, which is a dense campus of administrative buildings for both the city and the county of Orange. The civic center is also home to the Ronald Reagan Federal Building and Courthouse. Several historic homes dating from the late 1800s can be found as well, and their preservation is a key issue as development of the downtown area continues.

Not showy or sassy like some of Orange County’s more touristy towns, Santa Ana still serves as the county seat and the home of John Wayne Airport. The City is also known as the financial and governmental center of the county.
