How to Remove Data from Mobile Devices | TechWaste Recycling

Electronic devices of all types have many components that are easily recyclable. All those precious metals can be reused in future electronic devices. Recycling prevents chemicals such as radioactive isotopes, cadmium, mercury and chromium from entering into water supplies and harming natural habitats. Before you recycle your devices, ensure your data is properly cleared to prevent unwanted data acquisition.

Ways to Clear Data from Android Devices

Many employees inevitably use their mobile devices for personal and business use. For your company, ensure that all company related items are fully destroyed on the phone prior to disposing or recycling to ensure the data cannot be stolen. Android tablets work similarly to phones in regard to data destruction. Each android device might have a slightly different sequence of events for data destruction, but some general tips are:

  • If you can, keep and transfer your microSD card to keep most of the data
  • If not, back up your data on the computer
  • Once the data is backed up, format the microSD card by selecting storage under settings on the phone to delete the card’s data
  • After the data is deleted, encrypt the phone under the security tab in settings on the phone
  • Reset the phone when completely finished then send off for tech recycling
  • Many android devices require links to a Google account creating an automatic backup in the cloud

Ways to Clear Data from Apple Devices

iPads and iPhones are popular mobile devices for both business users and consumers. However, there are some differences between Apple and their android competitors. Use the following steps to eliminate data on your apple devices:

  • Back up your iPad or iPhone on the iCloud available under settings
  • Use a secure Wi-Fi connection to avoid draining the device’s battery
  • Another way to back up the device is by plugging it into the computer and running a backup through iTunes
  • For added security, select Encrypt Backup and add a password
  • Once the data is backed up, select General under settings on the phone then select Reset and Erase All Content and Settings
  • Erase the device from Find My Phone
  • Turn off Activate Lock after entering your password
  • Your device is now ready to be recycled
